Do looks matter? Alumna’s study says yes
Do we perceive more attractive people as more trustworthy? One UW-La Crosse alumna scientifically tested that theory while studying psychology at UW-L. Her undergraduate research study recently landed her some publicity in the national beauty magazine – Allure.
This summer 18 high school students and adults joined Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center staff in Holmen to excavate a late prehistoric campsite. The arrowheads and pottery found at the site date it to between AD 1300 and 1400.
Great River Folk Festival to be held on campus Aug. 26-28
Friday night performances by musician Trina Hamlin and well-known performer and 2010 Grammy award winner Loudon Wainwright III kick off a weekend of traditional and contemporary folk culture at the 36th annual Great River Folk Festival. Wainwright immediately follows Hamlin’s 7:30 p.m. performance Friday, Aug. 26, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition.
The festival includes music, crafts, dance and food. Gates open at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, and Sunday, Aug. 28, and end with a 6 p.m. concert Saturday and a 5 p.m. concert Sunday. Except for the Friday evening concert, all events are outdoors on the UW-L campus.

The formal dedication of UW-L’s new academic building, Centennial Hall, along with the Chancellor’s All-Campus Address and picnic are set for Wednesday, Aug. 31, in Lindner Forest (north of Wing Technology Center). The address begins at 10:30 a.m. The dedication and recognition begin at 11:30 a.m. The building is open for self-guided tours until 3 p.m. A picnic will follow the ceremony.

Sessions will help you create official UW-L Facebook pages
Web & Interactive Communications (iComm) is planning two workshops for faculty and staff wanting to create official UW-La Crosse Facebook pages. The sessions will cover how to start and maintain a university recognized facebook page.
Workshops are set from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17 and 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, in 15 Wing Technology Center. Sessions are free but you must register.
