Principal trumpeter of the Baltimore Symphony at UWL event

UW-La Crosse’s first Brass Day will feature the principal trumpet of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Wisconsin-native trumpeter Andrew Balio will lead sessions on brass during the event that runs from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, in the UWL Center for the Arts, 333 N. 16th St.

Balio earned his solo debut with the Milwaukee Symphony and has since performed trumpet solos around the world, including Lithuania, Russia, Italy and Brazil. Balio and his wife, Laura, recently launched the Future Symphony Institute. Its mission is to increase accessibility while maintaining the heritage of symphony music.

Brass Day will feature breathing techniques, master classes and brass ensemble rehearsal along with a performance by Balio. The event, which planners hope to hold annually, is sponsored by the UWL College of Liberal Studies and Department of Music.

Admission is $5 and includes lunch and a t-shirt. The day targets musicians from middle school on up. To register or for more information, visit www.uwlax.edu/music or contact Tom Seddon at 608.785.8411.
