The Pride Center's Statement on Anti-Trans Legislation

The Pride Center stands with trans, nonbinary, and intersex youth who are being impacted by the growing number of state bills against transgender youth and their access to school sports as well as gender-affirming medical care.

States are actively trying to make it illegal for transgender youth to take part in athletics. These laws focus only on transgender women and are based on assumptions, stereotypes, and fear. In Wisconsin, lawmakers introduced legislation that would ban transgender girls/women from participating in girls/women’s sports at the K-12 and university level. In Wisconsin’s Bill the lawmakers are suggesting sports be divided into three divisions based on sex assigned at birth: boys, girls, and coed.

States are attacking trans youth, some of our most vulnerable members of the LGBTQ+ community, by prohibiting them from gender-affirming medical care. These bills invalidate transgender/nonbinary identities. These bills go against the recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatricians and the Endocrine Society. Research shows that gender-affirming care improves health outcomes for transgender people, including youth!

These bills are discriminatory, transphobic, and unnecessary! Once again people are trying to de-humanize a group so that they can pass bills that take away their rights.
